Poker Rooms - Las Vegas:
Las Vegas is at the forefront of the world stage of gambling with card rooms, slots and any game under the sun being available, to suit every taste. It is Poker however, that is really flourishing, both on and off the Strip. In recent years, televised poker games have encouraged and motivated new players to join the throngs of experienced players who love the game. Televised poker games, from the World Poker Tour events to the World Series of Poker games that are screened on ESPN continue to receive strong ratings, pleasing both the networks and the viewers alike.
In 2003, the relative amateur Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker, the £2.5million first prize. It was his first casino tournament - all of his other games had only ever been played online! With players like him and two-time Poker World Tour winner Gus Hansen both being in their twenties, poker is being brought to younger generations of players and is enjoying the surge in interest from not only TV coverage, but also Internet accessibility. New players are able to practice their skills online, learn and be inspired by the televised games, and it is without a doubt that the increase in popularity leads to increased tournament registrations, leading to increased prize money! Most importantly of all however, the visibility and accessibility of online and televised poker mean that the fear of playing your very first game in a live casino tournament has been drastically reduced. Card rooms are no longer as intimidating to new and younger players because they have been able to learn some experience before arriving.
And so it is that the poker rooms of Las Vegas are doing a roaring trade. Poker Rooms and tournaments are available all year round catering for all bank rolls and profiles. The most famous big card rooms are usually found at The Bellagio, The MGM Grand and The Mirage (as mentioned in the film "Ocean's Eleven" starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt) and, of course, Binion's Horseshoe. Smaller rooms can be found at The Luxor, the Flamingo, The Sahara, and Mandelay Bay.
The Bellagio currently holds the most expensively weekly tournament, with a $540 dollar buy in no limit event held every Friday. The winnings at these tournaments used to be in the region of $6,000 several years ago, and may now well exceed $20.000 according to the Poker Tournament boss at the Bellagio, Jack McClelland.
